This morning, thieves proved they can hot-wire the old one.
Most small-business websites, including every WordPress site, run on an engine called PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, a website programming language).
Overnight, two independent researchers confirmed the first working break-in through two serious PHP flaws (PHP2Shell), on a trap server left open on purpose. Updating PHP is the only full fix.
Our own trap sites saw 140 WordPress probes and 315 hunts for leaked settings files in the last 24 hours. The knocking is constant.
3 moves, under 5 minutes each
- Ask your web host or web person one question: “Is our PHP patched for PHP2Shell (8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12 or newer)?”
- If the answer is “no” or “not sure,” ask them to update today. Many hosts have a one-click PHP version menu.
- Write down who manages your website and their contact, so you know who to call next time.

- The confirmed break-in was on trap servers; the real-world victim count is unknown.
- As of Oct 23 the flaws were not yet in the CISA KEV (Known Exploited Vulnerabilities) catalog.
